the summer, while in the Poconos, I bought a box of dusty old letters at a flea market. All were from one deceased man's home. His name was Jack Jolley. For the rest of the summer and most of the fall I read through most of the letters. I came across beautiful handwriting, wonderful stories, and gorgeous postal elements. It seemed intrusive, but after a while it made me realize that these letters represented a time where people took the time to communicate and inform each other about their lives, and happenings around the world in a long-form, coherent manner. The letters ranged from the 1940's to the 1980's. Through the letters he wrote and received, I felt like I began to know him. He seems like he had a very wonderful, very fulfilling life. I took my favorite elements from the letters and envelopes and letterpressed them onto coasters. It is definitely one of my most successful jobs to date. I printed 300 coasters, which made about 75 sets. Whether they are a stranger, friend, teacher, or family member, my interactions with people define my life. In studying English, I realized there were many common letterforms which were repetitive. The result was a concept to create new characters from these common letter combinations.
